Serengeti National Park is famous for its annual migration and is among the most famous wildlife reserves on the planet as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The name Serengeti comes from the never-ending plains or the Masai Siringitu. Vast open plains stretch right over the Serengeti with hills, lakes and kopjes, and the flat-topped acacia trees that are iconic adding versions.

The Serengeti National Park was formed several years ago when volcanic ash spread compact and highly fertile topsoil that was impenetrable and too corrosive for many tree roots. The few species that flourished were hardy grasses and the well-known flat-topped acacia trees. Grassland covers a lot of the plains, which makes it simple to see hunting for predators.

The Park is dense with wildlife, including the Great Five; leopards, lions, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos. Kopjes conceal lion rock hyraxes prides and agama lizards. Other predators so are at their peak from June to October and are found jackals and vultures. It has a bird species population of almost 500 or even more especially from the period of October – April. Primates, including black, vervet monkeys and baboons – and- white colobus monkeys collect around areas that are forested. Crocodiles and hippos dwell in rivers and the hippo pool. Wild cats are uncommonly seen but warthogs are scattered through the park and they are in a large population. Monitor Warthogs galloping gracefully across the plains, or standing erect and statuesque in groups. Burchell’s zebras and many antelope including Thomson’s, impalas and Grant’s gazelles, Patterson’s eland, klipspringers, Kirk’s dik-dik and wildebeests feed and frolic in the plains.

Wildebeests across to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya annually in an almost continual cycle in search of fresh grasses when the Serengeti’s savannahs dry up throughout the dry season. More than a million wildebeests, 250,000 plains zebras and 300,000 gazelles make the long journey. On this arduous journey each year wildebeests perish about 250,000. The very best time to visit Serengeti to find the annual migration is from December to June. The wildebeests cross the Mara River from June to October, in Masai Mara in November, and south to December. The wildebeests remain in the southeast till May then go north via the western hallway from June to July. The birthing season is from December to February. The timing of the migration changes somewhat from year to year.
