Tanzania in December: Safari and Zanzibar

Early December and the festive period need different booking strategies. Plan northern wildlife viewing, beach time and transfers with realistic weather expectations.

Choose your December dates first

The biggest planning mistake is treating December as one uniform season. A trip in the first part of the month may have different room choices and rates from a holiday spanning Christmas and New Year. Festive travel can be busy even while rain remains possible. Weather and accommodation demand do not follow the same calendar.

Early December

Worth investigating if your dates are flexible. Compare actual offers, safari camp locations and flight connections before assuming a saving.

Festive December

Prioritize availability for the complete route. Ask about minimum stays, special meals and deposit conditions at each property.

Give your planner your earliest arrival and latest departure dates, together with any fixed celebration plans. This reveals flexibility that a single preferred departure date can hide.

What weather means for Tanzania in December

December usually sits within northern Tanzania’s short-rain period. Rainfall varies between regions and years, and it is not possible to promise the end of the rains by a particular holiday. Plan game drives around conditions on the day rather than assuming an identical daily pattern.

The temperature contrast matters too. Safari mornings can feel cool, especially in the highlands, while Zanzibar is hot and humid. A suitcase containing only beach clothes will leave you uncomfortable at a crater-rim lodge. The seasonal travel guide explains the broader pattern; check an actual forecast close to departure and use it for packing adjustments, not as a guarantee for the whole itinerary.

Keep the safari route focused

For a first northern safari, central Serengeti and Ngorongoro make a useful combination. Central areas support a resident-wildlife itinerary, while the wider ecosystem may offer opportunities to look for moving wildebeest herds. The best overnight areas depend on grazing, rainfall and the time you have. Do not select a camp solely from a migration map.

Add Tarangire if woodland and elephants are priorities and the trip is long enough. If time is tight, protect two or three nights in your main wildlife area instead of adding another transfer. Our first safari guide helps set expectations, and the migration guide explains why herd locations remain conditional. December is not a reason to promise northern river crossings.

Choose Zanzibar for the beach you want

A Zanzibar hotel should match the way you want to spend your days. Ask about the beach directly in front of the property, changes through the tide cycle, access to swimming and the length of road transfers. A photograph taken at high tide cannot explain a full day on the shore.

Swimming plans

Check beach conditions and pool facilities if regular swimming is central to your holiday.

Boat activities

Allow room to move excursions when wind, rain or sea conditions require it.

Time away from the beach

Consider Stone Town or other land activities when choosing your base.

Room comfort

Confirm cooling, shade and family sleeping arrangements for humid weather.

Explore our Zanzibar guide before choosing a coast. No beach description can guarantee daily snorkeling visibility or safe boat departures.

Allow twelve days for a balanced combination

A twelve-day outline gives safari and beach separate space while counting the days that are easily forgotten. It is an illustration to adapt to your flights, rather than a promise that every connection operates daily.

Example twelve-day December safari and beach plan
DaysPlanWhat to confirm
1Arrive and overnight near the northern safari gatewayArrival time and airport transfer
2Travel toward the northern safari parksUseful viewing time and overnight area
3–5Serengeti stay with two full exploring daysCamp location and weather alternatives
6Return toward the Ngorongoro highlandsTransfer pace and accommodation
7Crater visit and overnight near onward departurePark timing and next-day flight
8Fly to Zanzibar and transfer to the beachCarrier baggage rules and hotel arrival
9–11Three complete beach daysOptional excursions and tide conditions
12Transfer and departInternational connection margin

The northern circuit and Zanzibar tour provides another starting point. Ask how its published tour days fit your international arrival and departure.

Treat transfer days as part of the holiday

A domestic flight can reduce road time without creating an extra full holiday day. Airport check-in, routing, airstrip stops and the final hotel transfer all take time. Ask which airport the flight uses and whether an overnight buffer is sensible before your international departure.

Read the flights guide with your actual route in mind. Baggage allowances can differ between international flights, domestic services and small safari aircraft, so check every sector rather than applying one assumed limit.

Check festive costs and booking conditions

Build the budget from exact dates and rooms. A festive surcharge or minimum stay can affect a short beach extension substantially, while a preferred safari camp may require a different sequence of parks. Availability should be checked across the entire journey before one attractive hotel is secured in isolation.

Request a complete December quote

  1. Specify dates, travelers, room sharing and children’s ages where relevant.
  2. Ask for named overnight areas and a clear daily outline.
  3. List flights, transfers, park charges and any festive extras separately.
  4. Review payment dates, cancellation terms and weather-dependent activities.

Compare value through time in each destination and the quality of the connections. An inexpensive additional night can be poor value if it creates a costly extra transfer.

Pack once for two different settings

  • Safari layers. Carry a light waterproof, fleece and practical closed shoes for cool starts and damp ground.
  • Beach comfort. Include breathable clothes, sun protection and suitable clothing for time in towns and villages.
  • Dry storage. Keep travel documents and electronics protected during vehicle, airport and boat transfers.
  • Carry-on essentials. Pack a change of clothes and items you need immediately if checked baggage is delayed.

Use the safari packing list as the foundation. Check current entry requirements before departure and confirm hotel laundry options so your bag remains manageable on domestic flights.

Common questions

Is early December better than Christmas?

It depends on your priorities. Early dates may offer different availability and pricing; festive dates suit a holiday celebration but can require earlier decisions. Neither period guarantees better weather.

Can I combine safari and Zanzibar in ten days?

Yes, with a focused safari and restrained beach plan. Count arrival, domestic travel and departure days honestly. Twelve to fourteen days gives more room if several parks and proper beach downtime matter.

Will the rain spoil Zanzibar?

It need not, but rain and sea conditions can change plans. Choose accommodation you enjoy spending time in and keep boat excursions movable rather than filling every day with prepaid activities.

Should the beach come before or after safari?

Either order can work. Decide using flights, room availability and your preferred pace. Beach after safari often creates a restful finish, provided the return connection has enough margin.

Plan the whole December journey together

Send your exact dates and safari-to-beach priorities through the enquiry form. A useful proposal should explain camp locations, festive conditions and every transfer before you choose rooms or pay deposits.
