Lake Manyara at a glance
Lake Manyara National Park is a narrow strip of land squeezed between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and a shallow, alkaline lake. Much of the park’s area is water, so the drivable section is compact. That is its strength: you can see several habitats in a few hours without long transfers.
Most travelers reach the gate from Arusha in roughly two hours, passing through the busy market town of Mto wa Mbu. From the gate, the road toward the Ngorongoro highlands climbs straight up the escarpment, which is why Manyara sits so naturally on the way to the crater.
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Drive from Arusha | About 2 hours on a paved road |
| Typical visit | Half day or full day game drive |
| Main habitats | Groundwater forest, acacia woodland, open lake shore, hot springs |
| Best known for | Baboon troops, elephants, hippos, birdlife and occasional tree-climbing lions |
| Pairs well with | Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti |

What you can see on a Lake Manyara safari
Manyara is not a big-plains park like the Serengeti. Wildlife viewing is more intimate, often at close range along forest tracks and the lake shore. Plan for variety rather than huge herds.
- Groundwater forest: Tall fig and mahogany trees fed by underground springs. Large baboon troops and blue monkeys are common here.
- Elephants: Often seen moving through woodland and along the escarpment base.
- Hippos: The hippo pool is a popular stop, especially in the middle of the day.
- Giraffe, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest: Found on the grassy floodplain near the lake shore.
- Birdlife: Pelicans, storks, hornbills and, when conditions suit them, flamingos on the lake.

Flamingo numbers also change with water levels and food supply. Some months the shoreline is pink; other months you may see only a few birds in the distance.
Who should add Lake Manyara?
Manyara earns its place when it saves you time or adds a habitat you will not see elsewhere on the route. Use this quick check before adding it.
A strong fit
- First safaris on the northern circuit
- Families who prefer shorter drives
- Bird and primate lovers
- Arrival days when a full Serengeti transfer is too long
A weaker fit
- Trips of three days or fewer
- Travelers focused only on big cats
- Repeat visitors who have already seen the park
- Itineraries that already include long forest walks elsewhere
If you are still choosing between parks, our Serengeti vs Ngorongoro comparison explains how the bigger parks differ.
Half day, full day or overnight?
- Half day
- The most common choiceA morning or afternoon game drive, then continue to a Karatu or crater-rim lodge.
- Full day
- Slower and more completeTime to reach the southern hot springs and stop at the hippo pool without rushing.
- Overnight
- Adds extra activitiesStay near the escarpment or in Manyara Ranch for walks, cycling or night drives outside the park.
For most travelers, a half day is enough. Choose a full day if you love birds, photography or a slower pace. An overnight works best when you want activities that are not possible on a standard game drive.
Lake Manyara vs Manyara Ranch Conservancy
These names are easy to confuse. Lake Manyara National Park is the protected park beside the lake. Manyara Ranch Conservancy is a separate area in the wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
| Feature | Lake Manyara National Park | Manyara Ranch Conservancy |
|---|---|---|
| Type | National park run by TANAPA | Conservancy in a wildlife corridor |
| Main activity | Vehicle game drives | Walks, drives and some night activities through lodges |
| Feel | Forest, lake shore and escarpment | Open acacia country and Maasai grazing land |
| Best for | A quick, varied game drive | A quieter overnight with more freedom |
Activities in the conservancy depend on the lodge you stay with. Ask what is included before you book.

Best time for a Lake Manyara safari
Lake Manyara can be visited all year. The experience changes more than the access.
June to October
Dry season. Thinner vegetation makes animals easier to spot, and roads are dusty but reliable.
November to December
Short rains. The forest is green, and showers are usually manageable.
January to February
A drier spell with good light and lush scenery. A popular time to combine with the southern Serengeti.
March to May
Long rains. Quieter and greener, but some tracks can become muddy.

Park fees and costs to plan for
Lake Manyara is usually one of the lower-cost parks on the northern circuit. Commonly quoted TANAPA rates place it in the same fee band as Tarangire, at about US$59 per non-resident adult per day including VAT. Fees can change, so always check the current tariff.
- Park entry: Paid per person, usually per 24-hour visit.
- Vehicle and guide: Usually included in a private safari quote.
- Optional extras: Canoeing, walks or night drives where available are priced separately.
- Lodging: Many travelers stay in Karatu or on the escarpment instead of inside the park.

How Manyara fits a northern circuit route
Manyara works best as a stepping stone. A simple pattern used on many itineraries looks like this:
- Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire for a full game drive.
- Day 2: Lake Manyara game drive, then overnight in Karatu.
- Days 3 to 4: Serengeti game drives.
- Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater, then return to Arusha.
This keeps driving days balanced and gives you four different landscapes in one trip. See Tarangire and Ngorongoro to compare the neighbouring stops, or read how many days you need for a Tanzania safari.

Common questions
How far is Lake Manyara from Arusha?
About two hours by road on a paved highway, depending on traffic and stops. It sits on the main route from Arusha to the Ngorongoro highlands.
Is one day enough for Lake Manyara?
Yes. Most travelers spend a half day or a full day. A half day covers the forest, hippo pool and lake shore. A full day adds time for the southern hot springs and slower birding.
Will I see tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Lions here sometimes rest in trees, yet sightings vary from week to week. Treat it as a bonus rather than the main reason to visit.
Are there flamingos at Lake Manyara all year?
No. Flamingo numbers depend on water levels and food supply. Some months bring large flocks, while other months you may see only a few birds far from the shore.
Can I visit Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro on the same day?
It is possible but tiring. A more comfortable plan is Manyara in the morning, overnight near the crater, and a full crater day the next morning.
