Stone Town
A UNESCO-listed maze of coral-rag houses, carved doors and alleys too narrow for cars. Still lived in, still working, and best seen on foot with somebody who knows it.
Zanzibar beaches are an hour's flight from the safari, and that proximity is the whole argument for going. You can watch lion at seven in the morning and be swimming before sunset. We book the flight as part of the trip so there is no backtracking to Arusha and nothing separate for you to arrange.
Where you stay matters more here than anywhere else in Tanzania, because the tides differ enormously around the island. The east coast has the reef and the better snorkelling but the water goes a long way out at low tide. The north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, is swimmable whatever the tide is doing. We ask which of those you actually care about before recommending anywhere.
Give Stone Town at least one night. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a working city rather than a preserved one, and the history in it — including the parts about the slave trade, which are neither comfortable nor optional — is worth a guided morning on foot before you go and lie on a beach.
Best time to visitJune–October and December–February

02
Nungwi and Kendwa, where the beach is swimmable at any state of the tide. This is where you go if getting into the sea whenever you feel like it matters.
03
Paje, Jambiani and Matemwe, with the reef offshore and the best snorkelling and diving on the island. Spectacular, and tidal.
04
The reason the island was fought over for centuries. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, and a genuinely interesting half day rather than a tourist trap.
The main event. We match the coast to the kind of swimming you want rather than to whichever lodge has availability.
Mnemba atoll off the north-east is the best known. Pemba, further north, is for experienced divers and far emptier.
Half a day on foot, including the former slave market and the Anglican cathedral built over it.
Half a day inland, and much better than it sounds.
